The Pennsylvania Section of Allegheny Highlands Trail exends from Confluence to Meyersdale, in Somerset County. An undeveloped, partially passable section of trail continues southeasteastward to the state line. See the Allegheny Trail Alliance website for maps and trailhead locations. GPS DataAll Data: Features & Trailheads Only: The Allegheny Highlands Trail starts by the Youghiogheny Dam, near the terminus of the Youghigheny River Trail. It follows along the Casselman River (not really much of a river for an eastern state) from the Youghiogheny Dam, through the big hills of the Allegheny Highlands, to the current terminus at Meyersdale. The trail is quiet, and you may go quite some distance without passing another person. The trail passes through pine woods, and offers an ocassional sweeping river view. The Salisbury Viaduct, near Meyersdale, is an impressive structure, 1900 feet long. This is the best spot for viewing the windmills in the area, though you can see some of them as far away as Garrett. The Pinkerton High Bridge and the Pinkerton Low Bridge offer some great views. A tunnel carried the railroad between these two bridges, but isn't open for the trail. A slightly rougher section of the trail takes you around the nose of the ridge instead. This section of the trail includes my favorite lunch spot. At the tunnel end of the Pinkerton Low, a path leads off in the upstream direction. This path opens out onto a sandstone ledge by the river. It's a beautiful location to relax and maybe even take a dip.
